Fourth Grade Makes a Word Cloud to Celebrate Digital Learning at S.E.S.

One cool way to organize a list of related words is to create a "wordcloud".  A word cloud is a visual representation of keywords or "tags" and sometimes data.  Mrs. Chappell's 4th grade made this word cloud to highlight digital learning and digital citizenship.  You can make your own by visiting http://www.tagxedo.com

First Grade Illustrators

In first grade we are learning a new way to be authors and illustrators.  We are learning about topic sentences, details, and closings to improve our writing. Today we used Paint on the computer to create an illustration of a spider. We are going to use our spider we created to publish a writing piece to display in our hallway. We are so excited to learn about new ways we can use technology to make learning exciting and fun!

How to make a Healthy Snack by 2nd Grade

The 2nd grade students will write a how to paragraph on their favorite healthy snack. The students will use the computers to produce a hard copy. Then, the students will use the ipads to persuade fellow classmates to try their healthy snack.
Mrs. Hibbs' class has worked on a weather PBL that included conducting several WebQuests.  These WebQuests allowed the students to take virtual field trips through hurricanes and tornadoes, as well as other weather phenomena.  The students send messages via Edmodo, where they also take quizzes and can link to other sites.  Coming soon is Mrs. Hibbs' class website where the students will be able to link directly to specific WebQuests and other websites that provide additional information on topics that we are currently studying.  Next week we will begin a new WebQuest to learn more about force and motion.  The students will sum up their experience by designing their own roller coasters!

Martin's Little Publishers

Over the last few weeks, my class has been learning about the various elements of informational writing. After going through the writing process, my students have began to publish their pieces as e-books using an ipad app. These e-books are available as digital downloads through email and can be read on any e-reader app such as Kindle, iBooks, or Nook.

S.E.S. Gets a New TECH TEAM!

The second semester at Sycamore Elementary brings an added special team for students.  In addition to our already established Leadership Team, we now have a Technology Team!  Our new members are all in the fourth grade and chosen by their teachers for demonstrating a love for technology and an initiative to complete special projects.

We would like to introduce our new members!

We look forward to seeing what these tech savvy students come up with to add to our school's digital success!  Stay in touch, we're going to shine at S.E.S.!

Using Instructional Videos in the Classroom

My fourth graders enjoy being able to use instructional videos as a part of their learning.  Many of our common core standards are explored by researching online and finding explanations of concepts that are often difficult to understand.  We regularly use LearnZillion, KhanAcademy and Discovery Education to investigate not only math but vocabulary, science, social studies and reading concepts.

Many fourth graders choose to watch instructional videos from Flocabulary, LearnZillion and KhanAcademy when they have extra time in computer lab.  Here are some links to our favorite sites.
